in which I gotta hand it to AI
Some say it's good to put positivity into the world. Here, then, are a few quirks of AI writing that are actually not that bad, and arguably good.
AI text overuses cliched metaphors attached to vapid slop. But they are not mixed metaphors. You can both highlight and underscore something with a marker. You can both emphasize and underscore something with HTML tags. You can both reflect and align a line in space. (I often wonder whether it's a coincidence that so many of these "AI vocabulary" metaphors relate to text markup and/or vector math.) This is far more metaphorical consistency than the average writer, who out of habit ends up "[playing] ducks and drakes with a battery which is able to write prescriptions."
For all its verbosity, AI text does seem to avoid localized wordy constructions. The group of phrases that have decreased in frequency post-AI are less noteworthy than the words at the other end of the axis, with few real takeaways -- but one noticeable trend at the bottom of the list is flabby filler like similar to the (you mean "like the"?), as a result of (you mean "because of"?), likely to be (you mean "probably"?), on the basis of (you mean "based on"?). Strunk and White would be proud.
Anyway, some things to think about as you eat your pizza cooked with glue.
